Outreach

OU’s Reading Recovery Center currently serves a network of 13 Reading Recovery teacher leaders at 13 regional sites, supporting 47 school districts and 138 elementary schools throughout the state. Since its establishment in 1991, Reading Recovery in Michigan has served over 120,000 of the state’s lowest performing first graders in the one-to-one intervention and has trained over 1,610 teachers.

In 2006, the OU Center added two additional, graduate-level, professional programs: Literacy Lessons (for teachers of special populations and English language learners) and Literacy Support (for classroom teachers and reading educators). Both programs are available to schools that have implemented Reading Recovery and who want to extend the literacy expertise of their K-6 grades educators. Like Reading Recovery, these professional programs comprise three consecutive semesters of graduate level coursework in addition to the provision of daily lessons to children identified in need of literacy intervention.
