Pre-Medical Studies in Puebla, Mexico

Classes will be held at the Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla, Asociacion Civil located in Puebla, Mexico.

Puebla is a city in east-central Mexico, southeast of Mexico City. It’s known for its culinary history, colonial architecture and pottery. The painted Talavera tiles adorning numerous buildings are locally produced. The Renaissance-era Puebla Cathedral has tall bell towers and overlooks the central square, the Zócalo. Museo Amparo offers an extensive display of pre-Hispanic art, such as ceramics and mural fragments.

Being both the fourth largest city in Mexico and the fourth largest Metropolitan area in Mexico, Puebla has a current population of 3.25 million people, and the city serves as one of the main hubs for eastern Central Mexico. Many students come from all over the country to study in its many renowned and prestigious universities, such as BUAP, UDLAP, Ibero, UPAEP, Tecnológico de Monterrey and Instituto Tecnológico de Puebla, among others. The city also excels in industry, having the world's largest Volkswagen factory outside Germany located in the Municipality of Cuautlancingo and an Audi plant in San José Chiapa that is the most technologically advanced plant in the western hemisphere.

Become part of the daily life of a busy Mexican hospital, learning about the healthcare need of the community while assisting the attending physicians. By the end of the program, you will be able to conduct an intake interview with a patient, evaluate symptoms and present a treatment plan, all in Spanish. You will complete two classes: Medical Theory and Medical Practice.

Medical rotations take place at the hospital and include time spent in emergency and urgent care, the medical clinic, the physiotherapy clinic and the nutrition clinic, under the supervision of physicians and other medical professionals.

• Two weeks of intensive Spanish language preparation with a focus on Spanish for healthcare purpose.
• Classroom modules on the health system in Mexico, patient consultation and examination, triage and first aid practice, wound treatment and suturing, presentation of clinical cases, Mexican traditional medicine and other subjects.
• Volunteer with children at the Ronald McDonald House.
• Opportunities to engage in research are available.

Students will attend a pre-departure meeting and receive a list of items to bring.

The program is open to pre-med students and students preparing for allied health services. At least one year of college-level Spanish completed before departure is required.
