Applying for Financial Assistance

To access and sign the FAFSA, as well as access federal websites related to financial aid, you must create an FSA ID. Parents whose information is included on the FAFSA must also create an FSA ID to sign the FAFSA electronically, and to access federal websites related to financial aid.

You will need to do the following when creating your FSA ID:

• Provide personal email (unique to each user)
• Provide social security number
• Provide birthdate
• Provide personal phone number (unique to each user)
• Select four challenge questions and provide answers
• Verify your email and your mobile number before you exit the FSA ID website

You (and your parents, where appropriate) should create an FSA IDat least 3-5 days priorto completing the FAFSA.

You should complete theFAFSAevery October 1 (or shortly thereafter) to apply for financial aid for the next academic year. Since some financial assistance is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, you should complete the FAFSA as soon as it becomes available on October 1 to increase your chances of receiving aid. Include Oakland’s school code (002307) on your FAFSA to ensure we receive your application.

Students (and parents, when applicable) who file taxes are encouraged to complete the FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) embedded in the FAFSA. Using the DRT confirms the tax information filed with the IRS and provides an added measure of security by never showing tax data on the screen. The tax information is encrypted and only shows “Transferred from the IRS” as the answer for each question. The information does not become unencrypted and visible until received by OU’s Student Financial Services for processing.

Students who complete their FAFSA in October can expect to begin receiving financial aid award notifications beginning in January.

Complete the FAFSA

If you complete the FAFSA in October, you can expect to receive financial aid award notifications beginning in January. Electronic award notifications are sent to your Oakland email address, asking you to view onMySAILthe amount and types of financial assistance for which you are eligible. Always remember to check your Oakland University email regularly — you do not want to miss these notifications forawards and requirements.

If there are any changes or updates to your financial aid award package, a revised award notification will be sent. If a situation occurs which significantly impacts your household's current financial standing, you should call (248) 370-2550 to speak with a financial aid adviser immediately.
