The student organizations listed below are affiliated with the School of Engineering and Computer Science. Most are local student chapters of national organizations. Others are local groups that share a common interest or purpose.

Association for Computer Machinery (ACM-SIGCHI)

Their actions enhance ACM’s ability to raise awareness of computing’s important technical, educational, and social issues around the world.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE, read I-Triple-E) is a non-profit professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation related to electricity. It has more than 400,000 members in more than 160 countries, 45% outside the United States. At Oakland, we hold meetings and events for all students to join. The group is heavily comprised of Electrical and Computer Engineers, but anyone with a passion for technology can join!

Maker's Club

Maker’s Club invites students to collaborate on such projects as robots, interactive games and kinetic sculptures. Makers’ Club began in the School of Engineering and Computer Science and has expanded to include the Department of Art and the Department of Chemistry. Students use such technologies as microcontrollers, camera vision, 3D printing and laser cutting. Students learn these skills together, as a supportive community- no experience needed to join! Maker’s Club is looking for creative, hard-working, community-minded people who want to make innovative projects. All Oakland University students are welcome. Club projects are showcased every year at Maker Faire Detroit, an international event held at the Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI each July.

ORA integrates principles from all disciplines of engineering in the development of our robots, and provide valuable hands-on design and building experience to our members that cannot be learned in the classroom.

Smart Vehicle Club (SVC)

A club dedicated to the development of an Autonomous Vehicle with a focus on computer science, software engineering, hardware engineering, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. SVC develops students beyond the classroom on industry trends and innovations of smart vehicles and the areas of deep learning, path learning, V2V, V28 and more.

The Smart Vehicles Club is comprised of a multidisciplinary team that is dedicated to the design and implementation of the autonomous systems of the Polaris GEM. The principle of autonomous vehicles is the ability to communicate with the surrounding environment, perceive this information, and react to this information. The club stands as a supplement to the University’s course offerings. Additionally, among the practical applications being explored in industry, Smart Vehicles, in particular, portend widespread societal and economic changes. Therefore, it is extremely valuable both financially and personally for aspiring students to become familiar in the techniques and implications of this technology.

Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)

The Formula SAE team at Oakland University designs, builds, and tests a formula racecar annually. SAE is an internationally recognized organization. SAE at OU competes locally and also with other Universities across the globe. Gain engineering experience outside the classroom by joining SAE. All majors are welcome to join and no experience is required.

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)
The purpose of our organization is to increase the number of Hispanic engineering students at Oakland University. We volunteer in high schools to inspire kids to enroll in engineering degrees. We will also develop and participate in programs with industry in order to benefit students seeking technical degrees. We strive to improve the retention of engineering students and help them so they can finish their program. Lastly, we will help and improve the exchange of information pertinent for Hispanic engineers enrolled at Oakland University.

Course description:

The main emphasis in this course will be on sheet metal forming processes focusing on: learning sheet metal stamping operations and understanding their capabilities and limitations, learning die design, fundamentals of sheet metal formability, Argus and Aramis techniques of measuring strains, learning very basics of theory of sheet metal forming to be able to understanding the results of numerical simulation, learning basics of sheet metal stamping equipment (including servopresses). Topics include: introduction to plasticity, testing sheet metal properties, understanding of blanking, piercing, trimming, drawing, flanging, hemming, sheet and tube hydroforming, and hot forming processes. Significant amount of time will be dedicated to construction of stamping dies and discussion of presses capabilities, especially new servopresses.

Learning outcomes: students will be able to use analytical and experimental methods characterizing material behavior in metal forming processes, understand limitations of sheet metal stamping operations, understand fundamentals of stamping die design and sheet metal stamping equipment.

The course is sponsored by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Depending on the performance in the class, and additional criteria you may qualify to be reimbursed for the class and an internship.

Tutoring is a free service offered to all OU SECS-enrolled students. Drop-in tutoring includes both in-person and via Zoom. SECS tutoring will begin onSeptember 12th, 2022.
