Italian Language and Culture in Italy

Italian Language and Culture Experiential Learning in Trieste, Italy enables students of the Italian language to have an immersive experience in-country to develop their linguistic abilities and intercultural knowledge. The course will be held during the Summer I session. The first three weeks will be taught on campus. Upon completion of the third week, students will travel to Trieste for the following three weeks of class. Class plus the program run May 8 - June 24, 2023.The study abroad portion runs June 2 - June 24, 2023.

Where You Will Be

Students will travel to Trieste, Italy for three weeks of class. Students will be responsible for purchasing their own round-trip tickets. They will stay in Italy for approximately 21 days. In Trieste, courses will be held at the Università degli studi di Trieste, with frequent educational excursions throughout the city. The accommodations will be in an apartment conveniently located in the historical center of the city, near the university where classes will be held, museums, shopping, and restaurants.

What you will learn

Students will enroll in IT 1150/ML 2900. Students who have only taken one semester of Italian will register for IT 1150. Students who have taken two or more semesters of Italian will register for ML 2900.

Vocabulary introduced will focus on the areas of public transportation, lodging, museums, restaurants, clothing and art. Through interaction with local conversation partners, beginning through Skype prior to departure and continuing in person upon arrival in Trieste, each student will have ample opportunity to utilize newly-learned grammatical structures and vocabulary items in conversation with native speakers.

The travel is a required component of this course, and students who cannot or do not plan to travel will not be permitted to enroll.

What you will do

Students will be introduced to the history, geography and local culture of the city of Trieste and the region of Friuli Venezia-Giulia through visits to museums, cathedrals and other sites of interest. Through immersion into the life of an Italian university, they will learn about modern Italian culture while gaining an appreciation for the art, architecture, music and cuisine of Trieste and the surrounding region. On the weekends, students will have the opportunity to visit nearby destinations such as Venice or Milan.
